- Compassion in Action Scholarships. $1,500 per student per year. We estimate that 100 students will be involved this year. Undergraduate student volunteers who pursuing a career in health care bring hope, encouragement and joy to patients in local nursing homes and hospitals, in the guise of Raggedy Ann & Andy so that thousands of people don’t have to face a serious illness or injury alone. In the process these future doctors and nurses learn how to communicate with compassion. $1,500 covers the cost of recruiting, screening, training, outfitting, motivating and supervising students for one year.
- Activating Compassion video series. Sponsors are needed to help raise the $100,000 needed to complete production, write the curriculum for the course, and promote this three-volume educational series for hospitals, hospices, nursing colleges, high school health academies and medical schools nationwide. This course describes a communication model for health care. It is a breakthrough in showing how communicating compassion is not a personality trait of the gifted few, but a learnable skill that all health care professionals can and should develop.
- Competencies in Compassion Evaluation Tool: for measuring improvements in the compassionate care of the seriously ill or injured. After developing a model to teach compassion (something many thought impossible) our next challenge is to measure it. In collaboration with hospitals, universities and specialists in the field, Adventures in Caring plans to develop cost effective means of tracking the progress of health care staff and students in their ability to convey compassion. $60,000.
- Culture of Compassion program for local nursing homes. This program combines ongoing training for staff, resources for families and volunteer visitors, to create a culture of compassion throughout the entire organization. $25,000 per facility per year.
- What Can I Say? A Guide to Visiting Friends and family Who are Ill. Campaign to distribute this book for free to waiting rooms in local hospitals, clinics and doctor’s offices. So that families who are waiting, worrying and often feeling helpless, have a resource that helps them cope with the situation and play an active role in their loved one’s recovery. $5,000 sponsors 1,000 books (in English or Spanish.)
- Community Awareness Campaign: Raise the visibility of the accomplishments and mission of the Adventures in Caring Foundation, so that the importance of keeping compassion in health care is not forgotten. $25,000.
- Raggedy Program Replication Project: to create a pilot of satellite programs at college campuses within Southern Californnia, to duplicate the success of the program outside our local area. So that the program can then be expanded nationwide. Three pilot programs will cost $100,000 over a two year period.
- Adventures in Caring Website and Database: to create a virtual community of our own volunteers and alumni, and a worldwide network of people who champion the cause of compassion in health care. This website is a key component of developing a continually evolving knowledge base on the practical application of compassion in healing by gathering the wisdom gained from the many gifted healers who practice the medicine of compassion. $15,000 per year.
- Endowment Fund: to create the financial stability to reliably pass on these programs and discoveries to future generations. Our goal is to build a $5 million dollar endowment fund by 2010.
