Adventures in
Caring Premieres New Video
Over 65 representatives from Santa
Barbara’s health care community gathered Nov. 30 at the Karpeles
Manuscript Library Museum for a special premiere screening of the newly
released video by the Adventures in Caring Foundation. The video was introduced
by Simon Fox, Executive Director and Karen Fox, Founder of the Adventures in
Caring
Foundation. As Simon remarked “Compassion is active only
when you communicate so that patients can see, hear, and feel that you
care.” The 45 minute video, Compassion in Action: Being Effective in
Emotionally Difficult Conversations demonstrates how compassion is a
learnable skill for turning stressful situations into opportunities for
understanding and healing. The new video
follows up the first Adventures in Caring production, The Medicine of Compassion, both produced by Bent Myggen of VisonEars.com.
Among the many attendees: Dr.David Chernof, President of AiC’s Board of Directors, and his wife Chris; Cynthia Bowers and Neil Sullivan from Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinic. Representatives also included Jan Anderson and Jane Metiu from SBCC’s School of Nursing; Paula Bruice of UCSB’s Chemistry Department; Eileen Bunning of Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care; Melinda Staveley of Rehabilitation Institute at Santa Barbara. Anna Bissell, Tokie Shynk, Michael Bordofsky, and Karen Hamilton represented Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, as did Pat Heller from Cottage Health System Foundation. Charlotte Dullea and Anne Bentley were present from Goleta Valley Hospital; Charles and Nina Zimmer and Dana VanderMey attended from Hospice of Santa Barbara. Also in attendance were Lauri Yttri, Vista del Monte; Judy Mullins, Ventura County Medical Center; and Jean DeBetitgnies, Muller & Weber Physical Therapy.
The new video was made possible with the financial support of the Wood-Claeyssens Foundation. A short preview of The Medicine of Compassion and Compassion in Action can be viewed at the Adventures in Caring Website: www.AdventuresInCaring.org.
